What is perianal thrombosis?
Perianal thrombosis develops when a blood clot (thrombus) forms in a small vein at the edge of the anus. On the outside it shows as a suddenly appearing, firm and painful bluish lump at the anal opening. The pain is usually worst in the first days and is made worse by sitting, walking and bowel movements.
Although it is an unpleasant and painful condition, it is not life-threatening and the clot does not spread into the body. It is often confused with hemorrhoids – thrombosis, however, appears suddenly, within hours, and therefore requires a prompt examination and a decision on the right approach.
