Gallbladder inflammation (cholecystitis)
Gallbladder inflammation most often develops when a stone blocks the outlet of the gallbladder and bile builds up inside it. It presents with pain under the right rib cage, fever and nausea. Acute inflammation belongs in a hospital – at the Proctocare clinic in Bratislava, once it is under control, we offer you a planned laparoscopic operation that prevents it from coming back.

What gallbladder inflammation is
Cholecystitis is an inflammation of the gallbladder wall. In the great majority of cases it is caused by gallstones blocking the outlet of the gallbladder – bile builds up, and the gallbladder wall stretches, becomes irritated and inflamed.
The inflammation can run an acute course, with sudden severe pain and fever, or recur in milder waves as chronic inflammation. Each further episode damages the gallbladder wall and increases the risk of serious complications.
Symptoms of gallbladder inflammation
- Constant pain under the right rib cage, stronger than an ordinary colic and lasting for hours
- Pain radiating to the back or under the right shoulder blade, worse on breathing in and moving
- Fever, chills and sweating
- Nausea, vomiting, loss of appetite
- Tenderness of the abdomen to the touch below the right ribs
Acute gallbladder inflammation belongs in a hospital
- Severe pain below the right ribs lasting more than a few hours
- Fever and chills together with abdominal pain
- Yellowing of the skin or the whites of the eyes, dark urine
- Repeated vomiting, rapid worsening of your overall condition
Planned surgery once the inflammation is under control
The problem does not end when the acute inflammation subsides – the stones remain in the gallbladder, and the inflammation can return at any time, often in a worse form. That is why, after an acute episode has been managed, a planned gallbladder removal is the standard recommendation.
At the Proctocare clinic we perform laparoscopic cholecystectomy on a day-surgery basis: an operation under general anesthesia through 3–4 small incisions, after which you go home the same day. Operated by MUDr. Ivan Majeský, a surgeon with more than 20 years of experience in minimally invasive surgery.
How we prevent the inflammation from returning
The only reliable way to prevent a recurrence is to remove the gallbladder
Laparoscopic gallbladder surgery
The definitive solution – removing the gallbladder together with the stones removes the place where the inflammation starts. You go home the same day.
Surgical consultation
We assess your condition after the inflammation, go through your hospital findings and plan a suitable surgery date.

Frequently asked questions about gallbladder inflammation
No. Acute gallbladder inflammation with complications requires hospital care. Once the acute situation is under control, we can perform a planned laparoscopic operation with no waiting lists.
A colic usually eases within a few hours. With inflammation, the pain persists and is joined by fever, chills and tenderness of the abdomen to the touch. If you are not sure, it is better to get examined – with fever and severe pain, go straight to the emergency department.
It is strongly recommended. The stones remain in the gallbladder, and the inflammation often returns, with each further episode carrying more risk. A planned operation in a calm period is considerably safer than an acute procedure during inflammation.
The timing depends on the course of the inflammation and your overall condition – a planned operation is usually done several weeks after the acute episode has subsided. We set the exact date at the surgical consultation based on your findings.
Limiting fatty foods may make the trouble less frequent, but it does not remove the cause – the stones in the gallbladder. The only reliable way to prevent the inflammation from returning is to remove the gallbladder.
