Helicobacter pylori test
Helicobacter pylori is a bacterium that colonizes the stomach lining, is closely linked to stomach and duodenal ulcers and also increases the risk of stomach cancer. At our center in Bratislava at Bernolákova 9 we detect it by a non-invasive stool sample test, or directly from a sample of the lining taken during gastroscopy. The lead specialist for gastroenterology is MUDr. Tomáš Zamborský.

What Helicobacter pylori is and why to get tested
Helicobacter pylori is a bacterium that can survive in the acidic environment of the stomach and causes chronic inflammation of its lining. It is the most common cause of stomach and duodenal ulcers, and long-term infection also increases the risk of stomach cancer. Many carriers have no marked complaints at all.
At Proctocare we use two reliable methods of detection: a non-invasive stool sample test and detection from a sample of the lining, which we take directly during a gastroscopy if an endoscopic examination is needed anyway.
If the result is positive, we set up eradication treatment with antibiotics for you right away, and after it is completed we recommend a control test to confirm that the bacterium has been eliminated.
When a Helicobacter pylori test makes sense
We recommend testing especially in the following situations
- Recurrent pain in the upper abdomen, a feeling of fullness or nausea after meals
- A diagnosed stomach or duodenal ulcer – now or in the past
- Long-term heartburn and digestive complaints that do not respond to standard treatment
- Stomach cancer in the close family
- Checking the success of eradication treatment after its completion
If you are not sure whether the test is right for you, we will assess this at a gastroenterology consultation.
How testing works
From sample collection to any treatment and check – everything can be done at our center
1. Booking and consultation
You call or write to us, we arrange an appointment and the doctor assesses whether a stool test or sampling during gastroscopy is more appropriate.
2. Sample collection
You hand in the stool sample in a collection container according to our instructions. During gastroscopy, the doctor takes a sample of the lining directly during the examination.
3. Evaluation of the result
We send the sample to the laboratory and inform you of the result. The doctor explains to you what a positive or negative finding means.
4. Treatment and check
If positive, we set up eradication treatment with antibiotics and, after it is completed, recommend a control test to verify its success.

Treatment at our center
If the finding is positive, we set up eradication treatment with antibiotics and monitor its course.
Check after treatment
After treatment is completed, we verify with a control test that the bacterium has really been eliminated.
Preventing complications
Early eradication reduces the risk of ulcers and stomach cancer.
Preparing for the test
Preparation is minimal, but the medication you take affects the reliability of the result
- You collect the stool sample at home into a collection container according to the instructions you receive from us
- Tell us about all the medication you take – antibiotics and acid-reducing medication in particular can distort the result
- The doctor decides whether any medication should be stopped before the test; never stop it on your own
- If detection is done from a sample taken during gastroscopy, the gastroscopy preparation applies – fasting for 6 to 8 hours
After the test and if the result is positive
- The doctor discusses the test result with you and explains the next steps
- If the finding is positive, we set up eradication treatment with antibiotics combined with medication that reduces stomach acid production
- It is important to complete the whole course of treatment as prescribed, even if the complaints subside earlier
- After treatment is completed, we recommend a control test to confirm successful eradication of the bacterium
