Laser hemorrhoid surgery LHP® – the first in Slovakia
LHP® (LaserHemorrhoidoPlasty) is the gentlest modern method of hemorrhoid surgery – no cutting, no stitches and no open wound. At Proctocare we were the first in Slovakia to introduce it, and the procedure is performed exclusively by MUDr. Karim Masalkhi, founder and head physician of the clinic, certified in the LHP® method, with more than 20 years of experience and over 2000 patients treated with minimally invasive proctology.
- No scalpel, cutting or stitches – the laser works from inside the node
- Anesthesia chosen individually – local or general; you go home the same day
- Fast recovery – back to everyday activities in 3 to 7 days
Bratislava – Bernolákova 3 (STEIN II) · Žilina – Alexandra Rudnaya 100
What LHP® laser surgery is
In the LHP® method, the doctor inserts a thin laser fiber into the hemorrhoidal node through a tiny puncture. The laser energy shrinks the node from the inside in a controlled way and seals the vessels that supply it. The node then naturally contracts and is absorbed.
Unlike classic surgery, nothing is cut or stitched – no open wound is created, and the natural anatomy of the anal canal as well as full sphincter function are preserved. That is exactly why LHP® is significantly less painful and healing is faster. The procedure itself takes only 20–45 minutes, and you usually spend just 1–3 hours at the clinic.
In the minimally invasive laser treatment of hemorrhoids we also draw on experience from proctology centers abroad in Germany and Switzerland, where LHP® procedures are among the standard surgical methods.
Who LHP® is suitable for
- Patients with grade II and III internal hemorrhoids
- Those whose hemorrhoids returned after conservative treatment or rubber band ligation
- Patients worried about classic surgery and pain
- Anyone who needs to get back to work and everyday life quickly
Whether LHP® is right for you is assessed by the doctor at the initial examination. In cases of more pronounced mucosal prolapse we combine LHP® with mucopexy – more below. You can read more about the disease, its grades and symptoms on the page Hemorrhoids – symptoms, causes and treatment.
How the procedure works
From the first visit to going home – simple and stress-free.
1. Examination and choice of anesthesia
After the initial proctological examination, the doctor proposes the optimal type of anesthesia – local or general – according to the extent of the disease and your health.
2. Insertion of the laser fiber
The surgeon inserts a special thin laser fiber directly into the hemorrhoidal node through a tiny puncture.
3. Laser treatment
The thermal energy of the laser gently treats the tissue of the node, which shrinks and is naturally absorbed. The procedure takes 20–45 minutes; in advanced grades it is complemented by mucopexy.
4. Home the same day
There are no open wounds and no stitches are needed. You usually spend just 1–3 hours at the clinic and leave for home with recommendations and a follow-up appointment.
Mucopexy – the solution for advanced grades
Mucopexy is a gentle lifting and fixation of the prolapsing rectal lining back into its correct anatomical position. It removes the feeling of a foreign body and minimizes the risk of repeated prolapse.
In selected patients with more pronounced prolapse, laser treatment alone may not be enough – in that case we combine the LHP® method with mucopexy. Combined procedures are performed under general anesthesia on a day-surgery basis, so you go home on the day of the procedure.
We always choose the type of procedure and anesthesia individually, according to the extent of the disease and the anatomical findings. Smaller findings are treated on an outpatient basis under local anesthesia, advanced and combined procedures under general anesthesia.
Advantages of the LHP® method
No cutting or stitches
The laser works through a tiny puncture – no open wound is created as in classic surgery.
Minimal pain
Post-operative pain is significantly lower than after classic surgery – common painkillers are enough for most patients.
A fast return to life
Most patients return to everyday activities within 3–7 days.
Gentle and safe
With no open wound, the risk of complications is very low and healing is comfortable.
Sphincter function preserved
The method does not interfere with the muscle – continence and sphincter function remain intact.
A certified surgeon
MUDr. Karim Masalkhi is certified in the LHP® method and was the first to bring it to Slovakia.
Preparing for the procedure
- You have an initial proctological examination and a consultation, including the choice of anesthesia
- No demanding preparation is needed – you will receive exact instructions in advance
- If you take blood-thinning medication, let us know in advance
- For general anesthesia you come with an empty stomach; we always recommend an escort for the journey home
Recovery and healing
Healing after LHP® is significantly faster and more comfortable than after classic surgery – with no open wound and no dressing changes.
Day of the procedure
A short rest at the clinic (1–3 hours in total) and you go home. We recommend taking it easy for the first hours.
First days (3–7)
Possible mild pressure or discomfort, well controlled with common painkillers. Most patients return to everyday activities.
Weeks 2–3
Limit heavier physical work and intense sport. The shrinking of the hemorrhoids is already noticeable within 1–3 weeks.
Weeks 6–8
The final result of the treatment settles in. We check the healing at your scheduled follow-up.
Recommendations after the procedure
- Make sure you get enough fiber and fluids – soft stool speeds up healing (you can usually have a bowel movement the very next day)
- Keep the anal area gently clean (showering with lukewarm water)
- Avoid heavy lifting and intense sport for the first 2–3 weeks
Price of the LHP® laser surgery
Price confirmed after examination
The final amount is determined individually, according to the extent and grade of the hemorrhoidal disease and any need for additional mucopexy – we confirm it bindingly after the initial examination (80 €, a comprehensive examination including rectoscopy 100 €). We are a private clinic, not contracted with public health insurers, which is why we can book you in with no waiting and no referral. You will find the complete prices in the proctology price list.
Frequently asked patient questions
Most patients return to their usual daily activities within 3 to 7 days. We recommend limiting heavier physical work and intense sport for approximately 2 to 3 weeks.
Post-operative pain is significantly lower compared with classic surgery. Most patients only need common painkillers for the first few days.
Smaller findings are treated on an outpatient basis under local anesthesia. In more advanced grades we perform the procedure under general anesthesia on a day-surgery basis (you go home the same day).
Yes. In cases of more pronounced prolapse we often combine the LHP® method with mucopexy to achieve the best long-term functional result.
The shrinking of the hemorrhoids is already noticeable within 1 to 3 weeks. The final effect settles in within 6 to 8 weeks after the procedure.
The price of the LHP® procedure is 1350 €. The final amount is determined individually, according to the extent and grade of the hemorrhoidal disease and any need for additional mucopexy.
In most cases as early as the next day. It is important to have enough fluids and fiber and to follow the post-operative recommendations.
The LHP® method is primarily intended for internal hemorrhoids. External components are treated individually, often with a combined approach.
The risk of complications with LHP® is very low. Most commonly it involves temporary bleeding or discomfort. Serious complications (e.g. impaired sphincter function) are significantly less frequent than with classic surgery.
