Kidney cancer
Kidney cancer is one of the tumours that cause no problems for a long time – a large share of cases today are discovered by chance during an ultrasound examination. That is exactly why a preventive examination is so valuable. At Proctocare in Bratislava, patients are cared for by the urologic oncologist MUDr. Ľuboš Rybár, the lead specialist overseeing urology.

What is kidney cancer
Kidney cancer is a malignant tumour that most often grows from the cells of the kidney tissue. It typically affects people between the ages of 60 and 70, more often men. What makes it insidious is that in its early stages it does not hurt or draw attention to itself in any other way.
A significant proportion of kidney tumours today are discovered by chance during an abdominal ultrasound carried out for a completely different reason – and it is precisely these incidentally detected tumours that tend to be small and very treatable. At our clinic, a kidney ultrasound is part of every initial urological examination.
Symptoms and warning signs
Symptoms usually come late, once the tumour is already larger. The classic trio of symptoms includes:
- Blood in the urine – visible or detected in a urine test
- Pain in the side or lower back that does not go away
- A palpable mass (lump) in the abdomen or side
- Unexplained weight loss, fatigue, a prolonged mild fever
- Newly developed high blood pressure or anaemia
If any of these symptoms appear, the tumour may already be advanced – which makes a preventive ultrasound examination all the more important.
Risk factors
- Smoking
- Being overweight and obesity
- High blood pressure
- Chronic kidney disease and long-term dialysis
- A family history of kidney cancer and certain hereditary syndromes
Diagnosis at our clinic
The basis is ultrasound – a quick examination that does not hurt, performed directly at our office.
Kidney ultrasound
Initial urological examination including ultrasound of the kidneys, bladder and testicles. Ultrasound reliably detects even small tumours that cause no symptoms.
Urine testing
Chemical and microscopic examination of the urine also detects blood that is not visible to the naked eye.
Blood tests
Laboratory tests to assess kidney function and your overall health.
Review of CT/MRI findings
If there is a suspicious finding, we arrange further investigation and an expert review of the imaging results as part of our urologic oncology consultation.
How we help you
We are a diagnostic and consulting facility – kidney tumour surgery and cancer treatment take place in hospital. We guide you through the whole process.
Complete diagnostics
Ultrasound, urine and blood tests in one place, with no waiting lists or referrals.
Second opinion
Urologic oncology consultation: a 30-minute consultation with a comprehensive examination and review of CT/MRI findings.
Follow-up care
Regular monitoring after treatment, and of small findings that, according to guidelines, are only kept under observation.
Direction to treatment
If surgery or cancer treatment is needed, we prepare you and direct you to a specialised facility. MUDr. Rybár also works at Bory Hospital.

Frequently asked questions about kidney cancer

In the early stages, usually none. Later, blood in the urine, pain in the side, a palpable mass in the abdomen, weight loss or a prolonged fever may appear. Symptoms therefore come late – which is why a preventive ultrasound makes sense.
