Inguinal (groin) hernia

An inguinal hernia is a bulge in the groin that develops when part of the abdominal contents pushes through a weakened spot in the abdominal wall. It is the most common type of hernia and affects mainly men. It never heals on its own – surgery is the only definitive solution.

Bratislava – Bernolákova 9 (STEIN II)

What an inguinal hernia is

An inguinal (groin) hernia develops in the area of the inguinal canal, through which the spermatic cord passes in men – the abdominal wall is naturally weaker here. Through this weakened spot, a sac of the abdominal lining pushes under the skin, and intestine or fatty tissue can slip into it. On the outside it shows as a bulge in the groin, sometimes extending into the scrotum.

It is the most common type of hernia – it accounts for the majority of all hernia operations and affects men considerably more often. The hernia gradually grows with age and exertion and never disappears on its own. The only definitive treatment is surgical closure of the defect, today standardly reinforced with mesh.

At our clinic we repair inguinal hernias laparoscopically on a day-surgery basis – patients go home on the day of their operation.

Symptoms of a groin hernia

The discomfort typically gets worse with exertion and standing

Even a hernia that does not hurt yet keeps growing over time. The smaller it is, the simpler and gentler the surgery.

Causes and risk factors

Diagnosis

The cornerstone is a clinical examination by a surgeon – an experienced doctor recognizes a groin hernia by sight and touch, with you standing and lying down, and when you cough. In unclear cases (small hernias, pain without a visible bulge), the diagnosis is completed with an ultrasound examination.

With us, the whole assessment takes place as part of a surgical consultation with MUDr. Ivan Majeský. At the same visit we also discuss the appropriate type of surgery, the date and the preparation – no referral and no waiting. You can book on +421 948 687 667.

Treatment at our clinic

We treat groin hernias minimally invasively and without a hospital stay

Laparoscopic hernia surgery

Hernia repair with mesh through three small incisions, under general anesthesia and on a day-surgery basis.

Surgical consultation

Examination, confirmation of the diagnosis and a treatment proposal directly with the clinic's head physician.

Day surgery

Surgery, post-operative monitoring and the follow-up check in one model of care – you go home on the day of your procedure.

When to seek help immediately

A strangulated hernia is a life-threatening condition

Frequently asked questions about inguinal hernias

No. The opening in the abdominal wall does not heal by itself, and the hernia tends to grow over time. Surgery is the only definitive solution. Neither exercise nor strengthening the abdominal muscles will remove a hernia.

A small painless hernia is not an acute condition, but postponing surgery lets it grow, and the risk of strangulation rises too. Smaller hernias are also simpler to repair, with a faster recovery. We therefore recommend not putting the operation off unnecessarily.

A belt may temporarily ease the discomfort, but it will not cure the hernia, and long-term use can weaken the abdominal wall and complicate later surgery. We see it only as a short-term bridge until the operation.

For a desk job, most patients return to work in about one to two weeks; for physical work, in four to six weeks. Heavy loads should be avoided as advised by the doctor.

Yes, a bilateral groin hernia is not rare. An advantage of laparoscopy is that we can repair both sides during a single procedure through the same small incisions. We propose the approach at the consultation.
