Skin and subcutaneous lesion surgery
Skin and subcutaneous lesions – moles, lipomas, atheromas or fibromas – are removed on an outpatient basis under local anesthesia, usually in 20 to 30 minutes. Every removed lesion is sent for histological examination. The procedures are performed by MUDr. Ivan Majeský, a surgeon focusing on minimally invasive and day surgery, at our clinic in Bratislava.

What lesions we remove
We remove skin as well as subcutaneous lesions: moles (pigmented nevi), lipomas (benign fatty tissue lumps), atheromas (blocked sebaceous glands) and fibromas (soft skin growths). The reason may be mechanical irritation, cosmetic concerns or a doctor’s recommendation.
The procedure is done on an outpatient basis under local anesthesia – you are fully awake, but you feel nothing at the treated site. Afterwards you go home without needing an escort, and you usually return to your normal activities straight away.
Every removed lesion is routinely sent for histological examination. This gives you certainty about the type of tissue involved – and it is why we recommend surgical removal over methods that destroy the tissue with no possibility of examining it.
When to have a lesion looked at
Reasons why a consultation is worthwhile
- The lesion is growing or changing shape
- A mole is changing color, has irregular edges or itches
- The lesion bleeds, weeps or becomes repeatedly inflamed
- It gets in the way when dressing, shaving or playing sport and is exposed to irritation
- The lesion bothers you cosmetically
We say it openly: suspicious pigmented lesions – moles that grow quickly, change color or have irregular edges – should first go to a dermatologist for examination (dermatoscopy). Surgical removal with histology then follows the dermatologist’s conclusion.
How the procedure works
Four steps from consultation to the histology result
1. Surgical consultation
The doctor assesses the lesion, explains the removal options and specifies the next steps. We usually agree on a date right away.
2. Local anesthesia
The area around the lesion is numbed with an injection of local anesthetic. You then feel nothing during the procedure itself.
3. Removal of the lesion (20–30 minutes)
We surgically remove the lesion and treat the wound, closing it if needed with fine sutures, with an emphasis on neat healing.
4. Histology and follow-up
The removed tissue is sent for histological examination. We go over the result and the wound healing at the follow-up check.
Benefits of the procedure with us
Gentle and outpatient
A short procedure under local anesthesia – no general anesthesia and no hospital stay.
Histology for every lesion
Every removed tissue sample is examined by a pathologist, so you know for certain what the lesion was.
Experienced surgeon
Procedures are performed by MUDr. Ivan Majeský.
No waiting and no referral
You get a consultation and procedure date quickly, and you need no recommendation from another doctor.
Preparing for the procedure
- No special preparation is usually needed – the procedure is under local anesthesia, so you do not need to fast
- Report blood thinners in advance – we agree on any adjustments
- Tell us about any allergies, especially to local anesthetics and disinfectants
- Come with the skin at the treatment site clean, without creams or makeup
- No escort is needed – after the procedure you can drive and leave on your own
After the procedure
Back to your activities
You usually return to normal activities straight away. For the first few days, keep the wound dry and protect it from friction and the sun.
Wound care
Keep the wound clean and dry as instructed by the doctor. Sutures are usually removed after 7 to 14 days, depending on the location.
Histology result
We go over the result of the histological examination with you at the follow-up check and explain whether any further steps are needed.
Frequently asked questions about skin lesion removal
No. The treatment site is numbed with a local anesthetic – you feel only the prick of the injection. Once the anesthetic wears off, the wound may be slightly tender, which ordinary painkillers handle well.
Usually 20 to 30 minutes, including preparation. It is done on an outpatient basis, so you go home right after treatment and need no escort.
Yes, every removed lesion is routinely sent for histological examination. It is the only way to determine the nature of the tissue with certainty – we go over the result with you at the follow-up check.
For moles that grow quickly, change color or have irregular edges, we recommend a dermatological examination with dermatoscopy first. Surgical removal with histology then follows the dermatologist’s conclusion – we say this openly, because the right order of examinations is in your best interest.
Every incision leaves a mark, but we use fine suture material with an emphasis on the neatest possible healing. The final appearance also depends on the location, the size of the lesion and how you care for the wound.
