Back pain

Almost everyone experiences back pain at some point in life – from a stiff neck after working at a computer to an acute spasm in the lower back. A neurological examination tells common muscle and joint problems apart from nerve root compression and other serious causes. In our practice in Bratislava we offer an examination, local injections and infusion therapy with no waiting.

Bratislava – Bernolákova 9 (STEIN II)

Spine-related (vertebrogenic) problems – what they are

The term vertebrogenic problems refers to pain and other symptoms originating in the spine – the vertebrae, intervertebral discs, joints, ligaments and surrounding muscles. The most common causes are overuse, prolonged sitting, poor movement habits and the degenerative changes that come with age.

It is important to distinguish simple (non-specific) back pain from nerve root irritation, when a bulging disc or bony changes press on a nerve root and the pain shoots into the limb – read more under sciatica and herniated disc.

By section of the spine

Cervical spine

Neck pain and stiffness, headaches originating in the cervical spine, dizziness, numbness shooting into the shoulder and arm. Typical for people working at a computer.

Thoracic spine

Pain between the shoulder blades and band-like chest pain that can mimic heart or stomach problems – which is why the correct distinction matters.

Lumbar spine

The most frequently affected section – lower back pain, acute back spasm (lumbago) and pain shooting into the buttock or lower limb.

Diagnosing back pain

The foundation is the initial neurological examination – a 30-minute consultation with a detailed medical history and a complete neurological examination: reflexes, sensation, muscle strength, nerve stretch tests. The clinical findings alone let us assess whether it is common muscle overuse or nerve root compression.

In the case of nerve root irritation we add an EMG examination, which objectively measures nerve function and the extent of damage. If imaging is needed, we refer you for an X-ray, CT or MRI at a partner facility and set the next steps based on the result.

Treating back pain in our practice

The goal is quick pain relief and a return to movement – long bed rest does not help the spine.

Infusion for an acute back spasm

For an acute spasm in the lower back or neck we give a pain-relieving and muscle-relaxing infusion right in the practice – for many patients it brings relief within hours.

Local injection

A targeted injection of medication to the painful spot or tendon attachment brings quick local relief for muscle spasms and blockages.

Neodolpasse anti-inflammatory infusions

Proven anti-inflammatory infusion therapy for vertebrogenic problems, given individually or as infusion packages.

Regimen, medication and movement

We set up pain relief and muscle relaxant medication, and advise on lifestyle measures, correct posture and exercises that prevent the problems from returning.

Book on +421 948 687 667. Details can be found in the neurology price list.

We do not perform spine surgery

Our practice focuses on diagnostics and conservative treatment, which helps the vast majority of patients with back pain. We do not perform spine surgery – it belongs at specialized neurosurgery and spine surgery centers.

If the examination reveals a finding that requires surgery, we tell you so openly, prepare complete documentation and direct you to a suitable facility. We are also happy to give a second opinion if surgery has already been suggested to you and you want to check whether a conservative alternative exists.

Frequently asked questions about back pain

If the pain lasts longer than two weeks, keeps coming back, shoots into a limb, is accompanied by numbness or weakness, or if ordinary painkillers do not work. In the case of limb weakness or bladder problems, seek medical help without delay.

No. You do not need a referral, and an MRI is not a condition for the examination – we decide on the need for imaging based on the clinical findings and refer you for it if necessary.

Neodolpasse is an anti-inflammatory infusion used for vertebrogenic problems. It is given in the practice individually or as infusion packages.

A local injection brings quick local relief for muscle spasms and blockages. How long the effect lasts varies – we combine the injection with infusion therapy, medication and a movement regimen so that the result lasts.
