Carotid ultrasound – ultrasound of the neck arteries
Carotid ultrasound – an ultrasound (Doppler) examination of the neck arteries supplying the brain – gently shows how blood flows through them and detects atherosclerotic plaques or narrowing. At our neurology practice in Bratislava, under the medical guarantee of MUDr. Michal Kozmon, we use it for dizziness, stroke prevention and when a murmur has been found in the neck. You get an appointment within a few days, no referral needed.

What a carotid ultrasound shows
Doppler ultrasound shows the blood flow through the arteries that carry blood to the brain – mainly the carotid and vertebral arteries. We see how fast and in which direction the blood flows, and whether the flow is restricted anywhere.
The examination detects narrowing of the arteries and atherosclerotic plaques – deposits on the vessel wall that narrow the flow and increase the risk of a stroke. That is precisely why a vessel ultrasound is an important part of prevention.
When a carotid ultrasound is appropriate
The most common reasons a neurologist recommends the examination
- Recurring dizziness and unsteadiness, where the blood supply to the brain needs to be assessed
- Stroke prevention, especially with high blood pressure, diabetes or high cholesterol
- A murmur found over the carotid artery during a routine examination
- Monitoring an already detected narrowing or atherosclerotic plaques
- Headaches and other problems where the doctor wants to assess the state of the brain vessels
More about diagnostics: dizziness and vertigo.
Why have a carotid ultrasound
Atherosclerosis of the neck arteries develops for years without symptoms – an ultrasound detects it early.
Stroke prevention
Early detection of a narrowed artery makes it possible to start treatment and reduce the risk of a stroke before it shows itself.
No preparation, no discomfort
A non-invasive examination with no radiation and no preparation – suitable also for repeated checks on how the finding develops.
Result immediately
The doctor explains the finding to you right after the examination and suggests the next steps – from adjusting risk factors to further examinations.
