Migraine and headaches
Headache is one of the most common reasons for visiting a neurologist. It is usually a migraine or a tension-type headache, but it is important to reliably rule out more serious, so-called secondary causes. At our neurology practice in Bratislava we examine you within a few days and set up treatment precisely according to the type of your headache.

Migraine, tension-type headache or something else?
Not every headache is a migraine. Migraine is an attack-based disorder – the pain is usually throbbing, often on one side of the head, worsens with movement and is accompanied by nausea and sensitivity to light and noise. Some patients have an aura before the attack, for example visual loss or flickering in front of the eyes.
Tension-type headache is the most common type – a dull, pressing pain “like a band” around the whole head, usually milder, related to stress, overload and stiffness of the neck muscles.
Secondary headaches are a sign of another condition – disorders of the cervical spine, high blood pressure, inflammation, vascular causes or, rarely, a tumor. Telling these apart is the main task of the neurological examination.
How the individual types of headache differ
Migraine
Attacks of throbbing pain lasting 4 to 72 hours, often one-sided, with nausea and sensitivity to light. Ordinary activity makes the pain worse.
Tension-type headache
A dull, two-sided pressure of mild to moderate intensity. Ordinary movement does not bother it, and it is not usually accompanied by vomiting or an aura.
Secondary headache
A new type of pain, a change in the character of long-standing headaches, pain after an injury or in another condition. It requires a thorough examination of the cause.
When to book an examination
- Headaches keep recurring or appear more often than before
- The pain limits you at work, at school or in family life
- Ordinary painkillers stop working or you take them too often
- The pain is accompanied by an aura, nausea, vomiting or sensitivity to light
- The character of long-standing headaches has changed
- You want to set up preventive treatment and reduce the number of attacks
Diagnosis: the examination
The foundation is the initial neurological examination – a 30-minute consultation during which we go through the character of the pain, triggers and the medication you take in detail, and perform a complete neurological examination. We can classify most headaches on the basis of a thorough medical history and the clinical findings alone.
If a secondary cause is suspected, we add an ultrasound of the brain vessels, or refer you for a CT or MRI examination at a partner facility.
Treating headaches in our practice
We set up treatment individually according to the type of pain, the frequency of attacks and your other conditions.
Acute treatment of an attack
Medication to stop an attack quickly – triptans and anti-inflammatory drugs – chosen according to the type of pain so that it works as soon as possible and safely.
Preventive treatment
For frequent or severe attacks we set up daily preventive treatment that reduces both the number and the intensity of attacks. We monitor the effect at regular follow-ups.
Infusion therapy for a severe attack
For a severe, persistent attack or a series of attacks we give infusion therapy right in the practice, individually or as infusion packages.
Follow-ups and treatment adjustment
The follow-up examination serves to evaluate the effect and adjust the treatment. Remote prescriptions are handled with an e-prescription.
Details can be found in the neurology price list. You can book on +421 948 687 667.
Frequently asked questions about migraine and headaches
A neurological examination tells them apart reliably. A migraine tends to come in attacks, is throbbing, often one-sided and accompanied by nausea or sensitivity to light. A tension-type headache is a dull two-sided pressure. During the examination we also rule out secondary causes of the pain.
No. We are a private practice not contracted with health insurers, you do not need a referral and we can offer you an appointment within a few days.
For a severe attack that does not respond to tablets, we give the medication directly into a vein as an infusion in the practice. We also offer infusion packages.
Migraine is an inherited predisposition that cannot be removed completely, but with properly set-up acute and preventive treatment we can significantly reduce both the number and the severity of attacks in most patients and give them back their normal functioning.
