Post-COVID syndrome
Post-COVID syndrome refers to health problems that persist or reappear after the acute phase of COVID-19 has passed. The range of symptoms is wide – alongside lung problems, a large group of patients is troubled precisely by neurological symptoms: fatigue, headaches, difficulty concentrating or numbness of the limbs. At our neurology practice in Bratislava we examine these problems and set up their treatment.
- You are seen by MUDr. Michal Kozmon, a board-certified neurologist with experience at UNB, and MUDr. Dominika Olšavská Koteková
- EMG and ultrasound of the brain vessels in one place
- No referral needed, an appointment usually within a few days

What post-COVID syndrome is
We speak of post-COVID syndrome (long COVID) when problems persist or appear even after the acute infection has subsided – usually for longer than 12 weeks – and cannot be explained by another condition. It does not depend on the severity of the illness: long-term problems also appear in patients who had a mild course of COVID.
According to current knowledge, a combination of factors contributes to the neurological problems – a prolonged inflammatory response of the body, involvement of the small blood vessels and nerve fibers, and general exhaustion after the infection. Most problems gradually improve over time, but correct diagnosis and treatment make recovery considerably easier.
Neurological symptoms of post-COVID syndrome
Book an examination if the following persist after you have had COVID:
- Excessive fatigue and exhaustion that do not ease with rest
- "Brain fog" – foggy thinking, difficulty concentrating and memory problems
- Headaches that started or got worse after the infection
- Loss of smell and taste persisting for weeks to months
- Numbness, burning or pins and needles in the limbs (possible polyneuropathy)
- Dizziness, sleep problems, palpitations and muscle pain
Diagnosing post-COVID problems
The foundation is a detailed medical history and a complete neurological examination. The aim is both to assess the post-COVID problems themselves and to rule out other conditions with similar symptoms – thyroid disorders, anemia, vitamin deficiencies or other neurological conditions that would require different treatment.
Depending on the nature of the problems, we add instrument-based examinations right in the practice: for numbness and burning of the limbs an EMG examination to confirm polyneuropathy, for dizziness and headaches an ultrasound of the brain and neck vessels. Laboratory tests help reveal inflammation or vitamin deficiencies.
How we can help you
There is no universal cure for post-COVID syndrome – we treat the individual problems in a targeted way.
Clarifying the problems
Neurological, instrument-based and laboratory examinations tell post-COVID problems apart from other conditions – that is the foundation of the right treatment.
Targeted treatment of symptoms
Treatment of headaches, neuropathic problems and sleep disorders, replacement of missing vitamins and supportive treatment for fatigue.
Regimen and reconditioning
Recommendations on gradually increasing your workload, on sleep and on memory training – getting back into shape after COVID requires a patient pace.
Monitoring the progress
The problems usually improve gradually – we monitor the progress at follow-ups and, if another specialist is needed (a lung specialist, a cardiologist), we direct you to them.
Book on +421 948 687 667 – an appointment within a few days.
When to see a doctor
Do not postpone a neurological examination if, after having had COVID, you notice:
- Fatigue and difficulty concentrating lasting longer than 2 to 3 months
- New or worsening headaches
- Numbness, burning or weakness of the limbs
- Persistent dizziness or loss of smell and taste
Frequently asked questions about post-COVID syndrome
It varies – in most patients the problems gradually improve over a few weeks to months. In some patients, however, they persist longer, and then targeted diagnostics and treatment make sense, to support recovery and rule out other causes.
It is a feeling of foggy thinking – slowed concentration, trouble finding words and forgetfulness. Adjusting sleep, a gradual return to mental workload and treatment of associated problems help. With the examination we also rule out other causes of memory and concentration problems.
Yes, polyneuropathy can appear after the infection – numbness, burning or weakness of the limbs. It is confirmed by an EMG examination, which we perform right in the practice. Based on the findings we set up treatment of the neuropathic problems.
In most patients the sense of smell gradually recovers within a few months. Recovery can be supported with smell training – regularly sniffing distinctive scents. With a long-lasting disorder, an examination is advisable to rule out other causes.
No. We are a private practice not contracted with health insurers, you do not need a referral and we can usually offer you an appointment within a few days.
